What is the glycemic index of food?

Glycemic Index (GI Index) was introduced by Dr. David Jenkins, of the University of Toronto, in the late 1970s. GIycemic Index of food measures the degree to which eating a particular food increases your blood sugar level and therefore contributes to weight gain.
